TROUT
ARE NOT NATIVE TO THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE. The first major introduction of trout and some salmon to Chile, took place in 1905, with ova brought from Germany to a hatchery at Río Blanco, not far from Santiago. By 1914, rainbow and brown trout were gradually introduced in almost every reachable drainage of the country. For decades fishermen from all over the world have visited Chile and experienced a memorable vacations and excellent fishing. Many books and magazines published around the globe have described trout fishing vacations in Chile. This created the well established fame that Chile has today as a fly fishermans paradise. From thousands of streams, a few privileged ones qualify for outstanding recreational angling. These places are well known and I doubt that there will be any real discoveries in the future. Anglers can choose from a palette of fly fishing possibilities: wading, or floating with a boat, from classic dry fly through nymphs and wet flies to streamer fishing for trophy fish. They will find lakes, rivers large and small, streams and creeks, with conditions requiring tackle from delicate light rods to medium to powerful ones capable of casting into gale winds for sea run trout. |
